When Your Child Visits the Library

WELCOME

Library visits are an important part of a child's creative and intellectual growth. Our staff wants your child's visit to be a  positive experience that encourages a love of reading for a lifetime. A child visiting our libraries receives the same welcome, assistance, and respect as any other valued patron.

We also ask you to consider the rights of all library users.  Please help us maintain an environment that allows for everyone's enjoyment by keeping your young child with you in the library.

LIBRARY CARD

Any child can get a library card with the signature of a parent or legal guardian. However, parents/guardians must sign in person (that means we won't send the card home with your child for you to sign). If you need assistance, simply ask for it at the Circulation Desk of your local library.

The Library staff does not make judgments as to what is suitable material for any individual ... particulary not for your child. Because everyone doesn't share the same values or viewpoints, we encourage you to assist your child in choosing materials until your child is mature enough to make independent selection decisions.

SAFETY

It is tempting to believe that your child can visit the library without worrying about safety; unfortunately, the library is a public building open to all. Please use the same precautions for insuring your child's safety here as you would in any other public location. Our staff cannot be responsible for keeping your child safe from harm. In the interest of safety, we request that children who cannot work independently not be left unattended in the library.

If your child is participating in a supervised program, please remain in the building. It is important that you should be available in case your child needs to leave the program for any reason.

Parents, please make sure your children are picked up before closing time.

PLEASE NOTE! It is the policy of this library system not to leave anyone under 18 alone after a branch closes. Staff members ask each child to please call their rides twenty (20) minutes before the library closes. If a ride has not arrived by closing time, staff will remain with the child for five minutes after which the police will be called. It is YOUR responsibility to be aware of our closing hours and to make sure your child has a ride.
